Women Successfully Defend Hays Open Title

HAYS, Kan. - For the second straight season, the Northern
Colorado women's cross country team won the title at the 2009 Tiger
Cross Country Open scoring 46 points. The men's team finished sixth
overall with 151 points.
"We had a really good day, despite the very cold and horrible
weather," said Head Coach Kevin Galbraith. It was a great day
individually for everyone, which led to the women winning again.
Almost all of the returners ran better here than last year, and
with the conditions, that's quite an accomplishment."
Three Bears finished in the top 10, led once again by senior
Kellie Callahan who placed fourth with a time of 18:26.77 over the
five kilometers. Denise Kintzley and Megan Horsch finished
sixth and seventh, respectively with times of 18:34.76 and
18:36.34. Erin Apsey timed a 19:03.94 to place 15th and
freshman Bridget Tiernan rounded out the scoring in 19th
place with a time of 19:15.29.
Jacqueline Lomax timed a 19:16.50 to finish 22nd,
while Rachel Forrest was 28thth in 19:25.49. Adrianne
Larson crossed the tape in 20:04.14 for 38th place and
Allie Sojourner ran a 21:00.25 for 49th.
Freshman Dylan Hedges paced the men's team, finishing
22nd overall with a time of 25:46.28 for the eight
kilometers. Junior Daniel Sojka clocked in at 26:10.91 to place
34th, while freshman Ben Wilson was 39th
overall at 26:24.62. David McClelland placed 69th in
27:45.36 and Brandon Garcia finished 77th in 28:29.71
for the team's 151 points. Terrance Casias finished 96th
in 30:41.44 for the only non-scoring men's finisher.
The next event for the Bears will be the Big Sky Conference
cross country championships on Oct. 31. Northern Colorado hosts the
event at the Boomerang Golf Course.
