Hegstad and Sandberg Named All-Independent

GREELEY, Colo. - In a vote by the coaches and sports information directors of independent Division I baseball institutions, Northern Colorado had two honored on the all-independent team as well as three named to the all-academic squad.

Senior outfielder Erik Hegstad was named to the First Team, while senior Kevin Sandberg was named to the Second Team. Hegstad, from Greeley, Colo., hit .353 on the year with 11 home runs, 16 doubles and 41 RBI to earn one of three outfield spots on the first team. Sandberg, an Aurora, Colo., native, was named the second team designated hitter after hitting .351 with 20 home runs, 13 doubles and 64 RBI.

To earn all-academic honors, each school was limited to three choices who are at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 grade point average and must be a starter or key reserve. Senior first baseman Andy Mees, junior outfielder Mike Raudenbush and junior relief pitcher Eric Skufca were all honored on the team.

The Independent Player of the Year is Ryan Goins from Dallas Baptist, while Bryant's Eric Polvani was named Pitcher of the Year and Newcomer of the Year went to Billy Burgess of Utah Valley. Dan Heefner from Dallas Baptist was also honored as the Coach of the Year.
