UC Davis Post-Game Notes

Game Notes at UC Davis * October 4, 2008

  • Ryan Lutz blocked UC Davis' first punt of the game, for the third straight blocked punt by Northern Colorado. It was Lutz' first blocked punt of his career.

  • Senior tight end Ryan Chesla scored his first touchdown of the season and the fifth of his career.

  • Sophomore safety Max Hewitt recorded his first career sack, combining with senior cornerback Myles Hayes for a loss of eight in the second quarter. Hayes now has 1.5 sacks in his career with the Bears.

  • Junior cornerback Quincy Wofford intercepted a pass for the third of his career and first of the season late in the second quarter. It is the team's third pick of the year and Wofford's 18-yard return is the second-longest of the season.

  • Junior kicker Michael York made his second field goal of the season and the third of his career, giving NC the 17-14 lead with 1:13 remaining in the first half. He went on to make two more, marking the second time in two years a kicker (Zak Bigelow, Montana State, Oct. 27, 2007) has made three field goals in a game.

  • Junior quarterback Bryan Waggener became the second-fastest quarterback in school history to 1,000 passing yards, doing so early in the third quarter. Only Harlon Hill winner Corte McGuffey did so faster, hitting one grand in the second quarter of his fourth game in 1998.

  • Senior cornerback Myles Hayes forced the second fumble of his career and the first of the season on the first drive of the third quarter.

  • Freshman VJ Holmes tallied his first fumble recovery on the same play.

  • Waggener busted free for a 66 yard run, setting up a field goal in the third quarter. It is the longest rush by a quarterback since the Bears began the transition to Division I in 2003. It is the second longest rush of the season by a Northern Colorado player and longer than any rushing play in the years 2004 through 2007.

  • Redshirt freshman Alex Shapiro started in the first game of his career, starting at center for the Bears.

  • Senior linebacker Cristian Sarmento kept his streak of double figure tackles against FCS opponents alive as he had 10 stops in the contest. Sarmento has now had 10 or more tackles in 12 straight games and is just seven shy of moving into 10th on the Northern Colorado career charts with 292 tackles.

  • Sarmento has also notched at least one sack in the last three games, bringing his career total to nine.
