Nov. 22, 2008 Post-Game Notes At Portland State
- Sophomore safety Max Hewitt forced the first fumble of his
career in the second quarter. It was the team's 13th
forced fumble of the season.
- Senior linebacker Cristian Sarmento recovered that fumble for
his second recovery of the season and the fifth of his career.
- Junior quarterback Bryan Waggener threw for 59 yards in the
first half giving him 2,351 on the year to move him from
11th on the single season list at Northern Colorado to
eighth, passing Jon Boyer (2000), Corte McGuffey (1997) and Tom
Beck (1996). He ended the game with 254 yards for a single-season
total of 2,546 to end sixth on the list, passing Beck (1995) and
Loren Snyder (1985).
- Waggener also ends the season with 2,716 yards of total
offense, which is good for fifth on the school's single season
charts.
- Senior running back David Woods rushed for 87 yards in the
first half. Woods went over the 100 yard mark for the second
straight game with the Bears' second play of the fourth quarter and
ended with 121 yards, just nine shy of his career best of 130 from
last season at Cal Poly.
- Sarmento ended the contest with 12 tackles, giving him double
figures for the sixth straight game and the 18th time in
the last 19 games against FCS competition. It brought his single
season total to 142, good for seventh on the Northern Colorado
single season list and 376 for his career, which ranks him fifth
all-time. He also notched 358 total tackles as a member of the Big
Sky Conference to rank fourth on that career chart and is the only
three-year player listed in the top 10.
- Northern Colorado scored 14 points in the first half, the most
since the Bears 29-9 victory at Idaho State on Oct. 11.
- Freshman VJ Holmes and Tony Kolone combined for a sack on the
first play of the second half. It was the first sack of the season
for either player.
- On the same drive, Martin Awachie tallied his first sack of the
year, forcing a punt and giving the Bears a short field.
- Freshman wide receiver Dominic Gunn had his longest reception,
38 yards in the fourth quarter, surpassing his previous best of 28
yards. He ended the day with 109 all purpose yards (60 receiving,
32 kickoff return, 17 punt return).
- Junior linebacker Logan Zabel also recorded his first sack of
the year in the fourth quarter, for the team's third of the game.
- For the fifth time this season, Waggener hit at eight receivers
in a game.
- For the first time since the third game of the year against
Northern Arizona, the Bears did not attempt a field goal in the
game.
