Bracket Results
Sophomore Calix Van Lier paced the Northern Colorado men's
tennis team in its first fall event, posting a 2-1 record in
singles and a 1-1 record in doubles action. The Bears were at the
Drake Fall Invitational along with Creighton, Drake, Gustavus
Adolphus, Minnesota, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and South
Dakota State.
In the ‘A' flight singles, Van Lier defeated Rob Young
(SIUE) in straight love sets, 6-0, 6-0 before defeating Billy
Paluch (Creighton), 6-3, 6-1. He was knocked out in the third round
by eventual champion Cesar Bracho of Drake, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Van Lier paired with Ryan Lane for doubles action. The pair
defeated South Dakota State's Jeff Moffatt and Morgan Salo 8-2
before dropping the second match to Billy Paluch and J.T. Christian
of Creighton 8-5.
In ‘B' flight singles, both freshmen Rob Edwards and Ryan
Lane lost their opening round matches. Edwards fell 6-3, 7-5 to
Dylan Reed of SIUE, while Lane dropped a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets
match to Kyle Obermeier. The two also lost in the consolation
matches, with Edwards losing 6-4, 7-5 to Evan Sims of South Dakota
State and Lane losing 6-4, 6-3 to Dominic Rossetto, also a
Jackrabbit.
Freshman Conor Buchanon won his first match in the ‘C'
flight, defeating Moffatt (SDSU), 6-1, 6-2 before losing to
eventual champion Eddie Svenda (Minnesota) 6-0, 6-2. Freshman
Travis Day was also victorious in his first round, needing a
third-set tiebreaker to advance 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 over Martin
Christensen (SIUE). He then lost 6-2, 6-2 in the second round to
James McAvoy of Creighton.
Sophomore Andre Lepine dropped his opening round match to Kyle
Olson of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-3, 6-2 and then fell in straight sets
in the consolation round to Devon Faulkenberg (SIUE), 7-5, 6-2.
Buchanon and Day also won their opening doubles round, defeating
Ryan Norman and Sean Mathison of Creighton 8-5. They lost to James
McKie and Guilherme Marsiglia from Drake in the second round, 8-4.
Edwards and Lepine paired for the doubles competition, losing
8-1 to Michael Sicora and Svenda of Minnesota and 8-0 to McKie and
Marsiglia of Drake.
The tennis team returns to the court Oct. 9-11 at the Balloon
Festival in Albuquerque, N.M.
