Bears Fall To San Francisco

Ariel Cook

A late scramble and eight shots in the last 15 minutes could not pull the Bears ahead in the 1-0 loss to San Francisco on Friday. Northern Colorado now moves to 1-2-0 on the season.

During the first half the Bears and Dons were evenly matched each recording three shots. It was San Francisco's Kelli Woodard that scored the only goal of the game only four minutes into the second half when Woodard had a break-away. Freshman goalkeeper Kirsten Salminen came out to attempt the save but Woodard made it past and scored on the undefended goal.

A corner kick from senior Maryann Hoke at 79:36 gave freshman Ariel Cook a chance at a goal, but the ball went into the post. On the rebound Cook got a shot on goal but was stopped by a save from Dons goalkeeper Kelly Pohle.

A couple minutes later the Bears had a second scramble in front of the San Francisco goal. The Dons had a foul to give Northern Colorado a free kick. The third shot from Cook was blocked by the Dons and sophomore Brittani Knott had a shot but was again stopped by Pohle. A third shot was attempted before Pohle held onto the ball.

The last shot for the Bears came off of a header from Knott after another free kick for Northern Colorado. Pohle came away with her fourth save of the second half.

The Bears had not played the Dons since 1985, the first year for soccer at Northern Colorado. This game ties up the series at 1-1-0.

Northern Colorado moves on the face the Wyoming Cowgirls at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Jackson Field.
