GREELEY, Colo. -- After four straight
conference losses, Northern Colorado soccer came back to life
Friday night at Jackson Stadium with a 4-0 victory over Eastern
Washington. Northern Colorado improves to 5-9-1 on the season and
1-4-0 in the Big Sky with the win, while the Eagles fall to 6-7-1
and 3-1-1.
The game went back and forth for most of a first half that saw
five shot by the Bears and two saves by Eagles goalkeeper Lisa
Demak.
In the 33rd minute, Northern Colorado sophomore Kimmie Feidler
took a pass from sophomore Ariel Cook and scored the first goal of
the night. Feidler made one touch before making a high shot just
out of reach of Demak putting.
The Bears outshot the Eagles 11-8 in the first half forcing a
total of three saves.
Northern Colorado increased its lead to 2-0 less than a minute
into the second half with a goal from senior Marcie Johnson.
Freshman Danielle Birdsall previous shot hit the crossbar, and
Johnson found the back of the net from eight yards out.
After a goalkeeper change for the Eagles, the Bears continued to
build on their 2-0 lead with a goal from freshman JJ Wykstra.
Feidler made a quick pass in front of the goal to Wykstra, who
found an open goal to put the Bears up 3-0 in the 66th minute.
Northern Colorado sealed the win with a final goal from
sophomore Ariel Cook. Sydney VanderVelde attempted a cross pass
that was deflected by keeper Jacki Gillis, but Cook took possession
of the ball behind the keeper and found an open path to the goal
for a 4-0 advantage.
This was the highest score for the Bears this season, and it
came against an Eagles team that entered allowing an average of
1.64 goals per game. Northern Colorado had previously scored three
goals in a win over the Air Force.
"We are really proud of the effort the team put out tonight,"
said head coach Tim Barrera, "We played a really complete game."
The Bears will continue Big Sky action at noon Sunday when they
host the Montana Grizzlies at Jackson Stadium.
