Women's tennis moves on to Big Sky semis with victory against Eagles


RESULTS: Big Sky quarterfinal vs. Eastern Washington

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Northern Colorado's women's tennis team won the doubles point Friday night, April 24, against Eastern Washington and then won three of six singles matches to come out on top 4-1 in its first-ever Big Sky Conference tournament victory.

The fourth-seeded Bears got doubles victories from Tabatha Knop and Manuela Santos (No. 1) and Tiffany Knop and Manuela Santos (No. 2) to start the match off strong against the fifth-seeded Eagles.

Tabatha Knop (No. 1 singles), Luiza Xavier (No. 5) and Jennifer Whateley (No. 6) then won their singles duels to give Northern Colorado the match victory.

Third-seed Northern Arizona earlier defeated sixth-seed Montana in the other quarterfinal. 

The Lumberjacks will face No. 2-seed Montana State in one semifinal Saturday, while the Bears will play top-seed Sacramento State in the other.

Northern Colorado won at No. 1 singles Friday after EWU's Marie Demerath retired against Tabatha Knop. Eastern Washington’s Rachel Berger then put the Eagles within one with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tiffany Knop at the No. 3 spot.

Northern Colorado’s Luiza Xavier (No. 5) later dispatched Kasie King 6-4, 6-4, and Jennifer Whately (No. 6) fought hard to earn a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Judy Liening and help the Bears advance to the semifinals.
