GREELEY, Colo. -- With six road victories in
seven tries this season, Northern Colorado's volleyball program is
in the midst of a beginning to a season that couldn't have been
written much better.
And the Bears adopted a page from their history Saturday night,
Sept. 13, in hosting their annual Alumni Match. Lyndsey Benson's
team hopes its the beginning of what they hope is a strong
home-court advantage during the 2008 season.
The Alumni squad, featuring many contributors from Northern
Colorado's past, started out rusty after having not played together
much prior to the match, and the current squad took advantage early
and held on late in set three for a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-18,
25-23).
Much as they have during the early part of the season, Kenzie
Shreeve and Allison Raguse led the current Bears in the
straight-sets win.
Shreeve contributed 12 kills and was one of three Northern
Colorado players to scoop eight digs, and Raguse, hitting at a
scorching .385 clip, matched Shreeve with 12 kills and had three
service aces.
Breanna VanDerMost led the way defensively with 12 digs, and
senior Lauren Carter dished out 34 assists.
Erin Deffenbaugh, the NCAA Division II National Player of the
Year, and Lizzy Rhoads led the Alumni group with five kills, and
Abby Mayne, who finished her Bears' career last season on the
program's top 10 all-time digs list, led the team with nine digs.
Stormie Wells, one of four Northern Colorado's Hall of Famers on
this year's Alumni team, was the director with 24 assists.
The current Bears will continue their season on Friday and
Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20 at Montana and Montana State.
Then, following a match on Sept. 23 at Denver, Northern Colorado
will officially open its home schedule against Sacramento State on
Sept. 27.
